Review: The Bad Mother

The Bad Mother
The Bad Mother by Esther Walker

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A hilariously honest, and rather sweary, book about parenting from the author of The Bad Cook.

From play dates to potty training, from weening to whining or whether to have two, or three, or more! Esther Walker focuses her unique humour on the art of parenting.

Fans of Esther’s blog and journalism, or her bestselling Bad Cook book, will not be disappointed. This is every bit as funny, sweary and just plain honest as you would expect.

Esther offers up her occasional successes and many failures as examples to parents everywhere: look, this is what happens, you’ll just have to deal with it!

Harassed mums and dads will read this and smile, as well as sighing with ‘it isn’t just me’ relief.

My thoughts

Quite a fun, and interesting read.
I like her accounts on many things, and reading it you realise that people don't belive how tired you get until they actually have a small child. How it can send you completly crazy. LOL for the first 3 months of our little one's life, my hubby and i passed on the stairs, one got up, one went to sleep, how the hell we functioned is still a mystery.
The issues of breast v formula. Everyone wants what is best. And at the time I have to say what is best, is whatever suits you at the time.
It covers a few things all new parents should know. and the main things are, you only do what is best for you. Do it your way. Listen to others, take on advice from others, but do Just what is best for you.
There are some great laugh out loud moments. Honest and no nonsense.
It is only a short read, so most people could easy finish this in one sitting.

Review: Silent Scream

Silent Scream
Silent Scream by Angela Marsons

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Don't ya just love it when you find another author to add to your Must Read author List.

I started this book, not having a real clue what it was going to be like, This is one of those books, that as soon as I see the cover I know I need to read it, regardless what the back cover says. I know, I know, don't judge a book by it's cover, but be honest, who doesn't do this.
So I started reading,
And OH wowzerzzz. Once started it is one of those books, that take over you, you have to read, and carry on reading, Unfortunately real life still exists so while stairing a pot on the stove, i read a couple more pages, while the little one destroyed my house (I mean played nice) - I read a few more pages.

Human bones are Found on the site of what was once A secure unit for soldiers, a borstal then a children s home, its a site that doesn't ever seem to have been a happy place. somewhere that seems to hold a lot of secrets and mysteries. And we all know in a good book, secrets can not stay a secret.

It really gripped me from early on. With some real good Characters.

I also found among the dark and gruesome details of the crime, there was moments where I had to smile at things that were said. The author still managed to put one or two funnier lighter moments into what could have been just a grizzly book.
The Relationship between Character was really well built. And I like how we get to know Kim through this book. Kim is one of those Character I really like, Bit of a no nonsense get on with it, or do-one kind of person, if it needs saying she seems to have a knack to saying it.
The relationship between f Kim and her team Was just right for me, I enjoyed it when they were dealing with things and chatting together. I think they are going to have a great working relationship. To me this can be as important as a good story line.

Something about Kim and her team didn't make me think of any other Detective/Police story I had read, and this is unusual, as much as I try not to, I do compare lead Character to others.
The twists and turns in this book really do keep you gripped and make for very interesting reading. At times you think you have things nicely figured out. then realize you haven't.
As always when doing a review, i fear for giving to much of the story away, so i'm not even going to attempt not to. I will say if you like a bloody good crime book, then this is a must read.

As this is Angela's Debut Crime book, I really can't wait to see what comes next. This was one of those books, that if you discover a couple of years after publication, you read it, enjoy it, then dive right in and but then next book and then the next book so you can read them all back to back. And I love it when that happens. I was disappointed at the end of this book, that the next one wasn't ready for me to read yet. It was that good.
I take my hat off to Angela and really do look forward to hearing/reading a lot more from this author.

Follow The Leader (A DS Allie Shenton Novel)
Book 2

Firstly a huge Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for allowing me to read this book before publication. I feel Honored.

I have just done a re-read of Taunting the dead. Allie Shenton Book 1. Before I started this, and I must say I enjoyed it just as much the 2nd time round. You can read my review of that bookhere.
It helped me recall what was what with Allie before starting this book.

We start with this book by actually knowing who the killer is early on, but that does not take anything away from this brilliantly written story. If anything I think it helps make the story as good as it is.

A man’s body has been found on a canal path. a plastic letter E found with him, doesn't seem to mean anything until days later when a second victim is found with a letter V on her.

Can Allie and her team figure out what is going on, and what these letters mean, or if they are even linked in anyway. Can they get the clues and work it out before anyone else is killed.
Having been able to see things from the Killer side, there was really times I wanted to Tell Allie what she needed to do next, lol.
I have a very fond liking of her Character, and really do like Allie. (she really does make me think of Jessica Daniel the copper from another series of books I have read, by Kerry Wilkinson, But that could be as I have read these 2 books back to back).

I found this book, soooooo much better than the first one, yet I really enjoyed the first one. It is another brilliantly written book from Mel. And I really do look forward to reading many more books from this author.

And how fantastic to realize the next book featuring Allie Shenton - Only the Brave is due out In May 2015. I'm now on countdown.

Review: The Murder Bag

The Murder Bag
The Murder Bag by Tony Parsons

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Firstly Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read this book.

DC Wolfe. for DC wolfe, life is about being another Male copper bringing up a daughter on his own.
I enjoy the private lives of characters as much as the work life, the police side of it. And in this book I liked Wolfe as a Daddy as well as Wolfe as a Police officer.
The story is based around a group of rich kids, who get up to no good at school, and the evil they did back then has followed them into adult life, with someone seeking revenge for their evils.

But can Wolfe and his team figure out just what went on, and who is behind it all. Wolfe like a lot of fictional coppers doesn't always want to follow rules, and lets be honest, if every fictional copper followed the rules we would get sick of reading about them.

There are quite a few twists through this book. Some great characters. And although part way through I felt it was a little repetitive in parts, I really did end up enjoying this book. And I look forward to reading the next one.
