Review: The Hollow Men

The Hollow Men The Hollow Men by Rob McCarthy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wowzers. I loved receiving a review copy of this book, Can you believe it actually arrived in a First aid box.
That is probably because at the end of this book it's quite possible you will need a Dr.

It kicks off brilliantly, right into the story, right into the action. Dr Harry Kent is just brilliant. He cares about other people in a big way. I can see that this is going to continue as a series of books, that you just can't wait for the next one, This series is going to be fanbloodytastic.
I believe this is actually a debut, I was shocked to learn that. It's written like it has been done by a long time writing author. Medical student Rob McCarthy is currently working on 2 more stories to feature Harry Kent. How good is that?

We are taken right into siege in a London Take away shop right from the opening pages, the action starts and it carries on from there. Solomon Idris has a gun and Hostages, yet Harry An ex Army Medic and now a part time police surgeon, is sent in to help Solomom Idris. It becomes clear early on that Idris is not well at all, in fact he's very poorly, but Harry can't seem to make him understand that he needs hospital treatment. Things soon start to go wrong, very wrong when Idris is shot and rushed to hospital.

It seems that Harry feels he has been set up, and as he continues to try and help, things start to become clear that all is not as it seems. And this is just the start.

The fact that Harry is a Police Dr rather that an actual copper gives this book it's edge, it's great to see something a little different. With him being a Dr there is a fair bit of medical jargon, but all explained or easy to understand so it doesn't put you off in any way at all. Harry is also an ex Soldier so has some of his own issues to contend with through life.

Di Nobel also features quite a lot in this book, and it was great to see her and Harry trying to put things together and help each other. It turned out that they make a great duo.

i'm really not sure I could say enough about this book to get across how much I really did enjoy it. It is well worth reading, it's upto date and thrilling and you will not be disappointed with it at all. Rob McCarthy is certainly an author to watch out for if this first book is anything to go by.

Review: Truth Lies Buried

Truth Lies Buried Truth Lies Buried by Lesley Welsh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I need to start this by saying a great big thank you to Tomas & Mercer and Netgalley for an ARC of this book. I'm so glad I read it.

This book started off brilliantly, Lesley Welsh is a new author for me, and one I will certainly be watching out for.
Right from the first few chapters we had action, and a few OMG moments. one of which I had to go back a few pages and re read to check I had read it right.
Brilliant opening. Grips you and drag's you right into the story line, leaving you wanting more, and needing to read on.
Monica I decided early on was a cow, and she really got on my nerves, But Sam was just a brilliant character, A character I was rooting for, one that you just want everything to turn out good for them. I liked how Sam was left to baby sit Brando, Monica's son. And I liked the cheeky little shit, even though you didn't want to, to start with.
Sam wasn't babysitting through choice, it just so happened that Sam ended up the only person home and had no choice but to look out for him, and as he starts out a proper little stuck up his own arse child, you soon see another side to him, when he is with Sam it's like he's just a normal child, and some of his protective walls come down. He turned into one of my favourite characters.
Having a mother like Monica raising you would be enough to make any child turn into a brat.
But I loved how we got to see another side of him.I just so didn't want this book to end. I could have read about Sam, and the other characters forever. I loved following them on one hell of a journey. There just seemed to be something going on at every turn, at one point I thought ok, well that concludes the story, when off it went again. Absolutely brilliantly written, with more twists than a bloody twister.
An amazing book and well worth reading. But I really was gutted when it ended.

Certainly an author to watch out for.

Review: Our Vinnie

Our Vinnie Our Vinnie by Julie Shaw
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I first hear about this book, I really really wanted to read it, So I went and purchased it from Amazon. But me being me, I also purchased the other two that were out then too. So I have had.
1 Our Vinnie
2 My Uncle Charlie
3 My Mam Shirley
All sat on my kindle for what seems like an age. Just looking on amazon then, it seems I purchased this book in December 2014, I just can't believe it has taken me this long to get around to reading it.
But I have to say i'm glad I finally did get around to it, as I really did enjoy it.
It seemed like an easy read, With some fantastic characters. Some you dispise and others you really fall for. One of the characters I really felt for was Titch, Vinnie's sister, I was really rooting for her throughout this book to do well in life and make something of herself.
Vinnie was just a character and a half, It was great following his up's and downs. more downs it seems, as he just doesn't seem to be able to keep himself out of trouble.
Based on a Bradford council estate, this book has all you would expect. It really is a great read, A book you want to carry on with just to see what will happen next.

Since I purchased this book Julie Shaw has since brought out another one.

4 Blood Ties
and book
5 Bad Blood is due out 14th July 2016

So If you have not yet read any of this authors books, there are certainly enough to get your teeth into.

Review: Play Dead

Play Dead Play Dead by Angela Marsons
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

fanbloodytastic read.

I know I know I said it with the last two books, but I really didn't think this series could get any better, when Boommmmmmmm Angela does it again. It still amazes me how authors can come up with time and time again, new and fresh stories.
This one was just absolutely fantabulous. A Brilliant read. I can't believe we are with Kim Stone again, and all ready at book 4. It really doesn't seem that long ago I was starting my first Angela Marsons book and wondering what to expect from a new author. Well all my expectations were met, and blown out the water. Angela is by far one of todays better crime writers, and that's some doing when you consider how many authors are writing crime books. But there is just something, individual, and fresh in her writing style and she has managed to create a character in Kim Stone that you just can't help but like.
I love it when you get so engrossed in a book, it's like you are part of the story.

If you are anything like me then I would advise that these books are read in order, but that is more just to get a feel and the background on Detective Kim Stone. If you are not to bothered about that, then you would get away with reading this as it is, but I really would say read them in order. You'll be glad you did.
And just so you don't have to go searching. Here they are in order.

1 Silent Scream
2 Evil Games
3 Lost Girls
4 Play Dead

Any way where was I? Oh Yeah this is certainly one hell of a read. And if it was possible to give it more than 5 stars then I certainly would. Angela Marsons is one hell of a story teller.

Westerley Research facility is unknown to most people. It is a body farm, where bodies are donated for research purposes. It's out of the way and not advertised to anyone.
Kim and her team are at the centre when they discover a body, only this body is nothing to do with the research.
so as Kim and her team are there, and Kim has discovered it, they set to, trying to find out who she is, and how she got there. It isn't long after when a second body turns up. But who is killing them and why, and more so how do they know that Westerley would normally be a great place to dump a body, had it not been for Kim and her team finding the first one.

A must must read for any crime thriller fan's. And I feel I can safely say that you will not be disappointed reading this.

Review: The Hard Detective

The Hard Detective The Hard Detective by H.R.F. Keating
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5/5

An interesting read, from an author that is new to me. This is the first book I have ready by this author, but I know it wont be the last as I have another two sitting on my kindle waiting for me to read.

This book Features Chief Inspector Harriet Martens, she is nick named The Hard Detective, and to start with she does seem very abrupt, and almost cold, a Hard faced Bitch. But maybe this is just a way of coping and dealing with the shit that is thrown at you as copper.

I felt like I got through this book pretty quick as it's only 263 pages, it is a very easy and enjoyable read, with a great story line to it. I felt like I was getting to know the characters as well as being thrown right in to the case and learning the story. I did at some points think that things were repeated a little too much.
And the reviews on this book seem to be up or down, i'm more middle of the road.

For some unknown reason, police officers are being killed. and after 2 officers are killed Harriet soon begins to realise that they have indeed been murdered, it then becomes apparent that each killing has some sort of connection to the Book of Exodus, A life for a life, an Eye for an Eye.... But why, what is the motive behind it. This has got to be some sick twisted killer. But how on earth is he choosing his victims. Can Harriet and her team figure this out and piece everything together before any more killings occur.
