Review: Hunted on the Fens

Hunted on the Fens Hunted on the Fens by Joy Ellis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is fast becoming one of my favourite series of detective books. I just love the characters in this book.
So I need to say a super big thank you to Netgalley, the author and Publishers for allowing me an ARC of this book.

I recently read the first two books in this series, and here we are at book 3, and I have to say the books get better each time. I didn't think it would be possible.
The story really drags you in, and I find myself rooting for the characters all the way through.
DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter just make the best partners ever. I love the way they interact, have banter but are a shoulder for each other when it's needed.
Another of the characters I really enjoy reading about is Cat. I loved her.

I know its said too often about books, but by god this really is one hell of a page turner. As soon as you start it, it's obvious that nothing else is getting done. Read, read and read. Because all the way through you need to know what is going to happen next, then you are hit with another twist, which then stops you from putting the book down.

If I could have one complaint about this book then it would have to be that it wasn't long enough, but in fairness I don't think 1000 pages would have been long enough for me.
I love it when reading a book that you manage to connect with the characters, and each individual one is different in their own right.

So enough of me waffling on, As I said this is the 3rd book in the series, and personally I would say you need to read them in order to be able to get a good feel for the characters, and a back history of their lives.

This book sends the team on one hell of a ride, their toughest case yet. Someone is out to harm them all in one way or another, the only problem is we don't know why. We get an idea of who they think it could be from early on, but the thing is have the team got it right, or are they chasing the wrong leads.

A first class page turner and a must read for anyone who likes to follow a brilliant series of detective thrillers.

I am so ready now for the next one, and I'm lucky enough to have it all ready on my kindle awaiting me starting it.

Review: Captive on the Fens

Captive on the Fens Captive on the Fens by Joy Ellis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OK, so it is no secret that I absolutely love this series. I can't believe we are at book 6 all ready. Back with DI Nikki Galena and her team, I couldn't wait to start this book when I was approved to read an early copy via Netgalley.

By god it's a good one. I know we tend to say it a lot, but each book is just getting better and better, and I'm really hoping this will be a long running series.
I love the characters, especially Nikki and Joseph, I think their working relationship is first class. I keep wanting it to become more than just friends, but then I think it would completely spoil the stories going forward.

This time around a woman's body is found in an old barn, the woman has a finger missing.
It's not long before another case is linked to this, and the team can start to move forward.

The team also learn that Criminal Freddy Carver has been seen back on the fens, and that can only mean trouble. Trouble Nikki does not want or need. And she's determined to track him down and put a stop to whatever it is he is up to.

The banter between the team is first class, the feelings they have for one another is first class, they are certainly a team that stick together.
I really can't wait for more of this series. I would not hesitate at all to recommend this series to anyone who likes a good crime thriller with lots of twists and turns.

Having read the previous books I do feel it gives me a better understanding of the characters back stories, and for me that helps make each book that little bit better. So if you are going to start them, and believe me I think you should, then please do start from book 1.

Joy Ellis has written a blinder of story here. I NEED the next book NOW.

Review: Prayer for the Dead

Prayer for the Dead Prayer for the Dead by James Oswald
My rating: 0 of 5 stars

Here we are, book 5 and back in the life of Inspector Tony McLean.
I only started this series at book 4. That wasn't intentional I didn't realise at the time I was reading the 4th book, so thought I'd just carry on from there.
In this book McLean is asked to investigate a missing reporter, by another reporter Jo Dalgleish. She is concerned that her colleague is missing. It turns out she has every reason to be concerned when he turns up dead.
Found in a cave.
He also has issues with Madam Rose, a fortune teller who turns up needing somewhere to stay.
I don't want to give to much of the story away, as I really don't want to spoil it for anyone who is yet to read it.
But
I really enjoyed this book. The way the story went was very well done.
I think had I read books 1 to 3 I may have more of McLean's background, but I don't think only starting at book 4 has done me any harm really.
McLean is a likeable character, and he's really growing on me. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in and being able to read the next book in this series. I have it waiting on my kindle to get started.

Review: Blue Wicked

Blue Wicked Blue Wicked by Alan Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was lucky enough to recieve this book as a gift from the author. And it was my choice to leave a review or not.
As my reading list is so long at the moment, I thought it would be a good while before I got around to reading it.
Each time I turned my kindle on that cover kept looking at me. I was intregued to know what it was all about, the cover certainly doesn't give anything away and it's only after reading it, I understood. While on my break in work, I didn't want to spend to long figuring out which book I'd told myself I was going to read next, so I opend this one up. (bad me, i'm supposed to be following my to read list).

I have to admit I really didn't know what to expect from it, as I hadn't really read much of what the book was about. I'm so glad I chose this one to read, I got into the book right away and afther the first chapter or two I knew I was going to enojoy it.

Alan Jones is a pretty new author to me, I recently read Bloq and loved it, so knew he could write a damn good book. And this one is just as good.
This book gives us Eddie Henderson, a vet. He is investigating a series of cat deaths, that are by no means an accident.
When bodies begin turning up then Eddie is sure it is related to the cat deaths. However the police don't seem convinced.
Eddie starts working with Detective Constable Cathering Douglas.
And I loved the way they got on together. They certainly made a good team, the Vet and the Cop.
The story gripped me from early in the book. But I feel that i should mention, if you can't read anything graphic, or anything containing animal cruelty then don't read this book it is pretty gruesome in parts. However if you like a damn good book, one that grips you and drags you into the pages and can understand that it is fiction, and put the animal cruelty to the back of your mind, then you need to pick this book up now and read it. I can't shout loud enough how much I REALLY DID ENJOY THIS BOOK. And belive me when I say, the more you read the more you are dragged into it, to the point it hurts to put the book down.

Review: Lee Rigby: A Mother's Story

Lee Rigby: A Mother's Story Lee Rigby: A Mother's Story by Lyn Rigby
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Heartbreaking. No family should have to deal with this, The Killing of Lee Rigby was big news, and followed by millions from around the world.
In this Story his mother Lyn tells of the life of Lee, and how her and her family tried to cope at the time of this tragic killing, and in the years that have followed.

It was truly heartbreaking reading this book. And I have to say Lyn has done her son and herself proud writing it.

I found it a difficult read, it really was an emotional rollercoster reading it. It also hit me hard, when Lyn mentions her best friend Sandra. I worked with Sandra for many years, and I remember the emotions she went through when this happened with Lee, Her best mates son and the little lad from across the road, what I found heartbreaking, is since all this, Sandra has passed away after a fight with Cancer, and I trully belive her and Lee with be up there causing mayhem toghether.

Lyn has gone through so much, and reading this book highlights a lot of it. you can feel her raw emotions in the words, I just can't comprehend how you get through something like this.

A big box of tissues is needed to read this, there are parts where you can't help but have tears running down your face. You want to be alone in a room when reading this, you'll need to be.

Lyn and Rosie you have put together an amazingly heartwarming, and emotional book, I can't imagine the amount of tears that went into writing it. And I think Lyn sharing her story is just amazing. Well done to all involved.

If Lyn Ever reads any of these reviews, I would like to wish you all the very best, and I hope having your son looking down on you helps you build yourself and your family day by day.

Review: The Alibi: A gripping thriller with a knockout twist

The Alibi: A gripping thriller with a knockout twist The Alibi: A gripping thriller with a knockout twist by Jaime Raven
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have to say I really did enjoy this book. I found it a very interesting but easy read.
Earlier this year I read Jamie Ravens Debut book The Madam. My review of that book can be read here. So when I saw this one available on Netgalley I couldn't help myself but request it, even though I had put myself on a Netgalley ban, while I try and play catch up with my outstanding books.

I have to say I'm glad i broke my Netgalley ban to get this book, because I thouroghly enjoyed it.

Crime reporter Beth Chambers seems to be someone who will do what it takes to get an exclusive story. And that doesn't alway mean following the rules.
Megan Fuller is an actress, or she was before she was murdered. Her Ex husband Danny Shapiro is one of the suspects and needs to make sure his alibi is water tight, he know's he didn't do it, but can he prove to others that he didn't.

The story in this book is totally beliveable, and at times I wanted to give Beth a slap or two for her wrecklessness, knowing she has a small child at home, upsetting some of the underworld criminals is not the best way to go. Having said that I reallly liked her character. I think her being a reporter really added to the intensity of the story.

The plot is done brilliantly the way it unfolds, and you are wondering all the way through which way the story is going to go.

I really got caught up in this book, and wanted to read it at every opportunity.
A Brilliantly well put together gritty story.
